Synopsis
The story unfolds in a fantastical realm between death and reincarnation, where souls linger before moving on to their next cycle. Gudo, a spirit guide, is tasked with leading them forward until he encounters Yuri, a girl trapped by rage and lingering obsession. Their meeting sets in motion a journey of understanding and redemption. In order to prevent her emotions from destabilizing the balance of this world, Kudo must accompany her through fragmented memories and time itself, gradually uncovering the deeper structures of human emotion.
The film is adapted from the Japanese novel SENNENKI, reimagining its emotional intensity and philosophical depth through animation. It intertwines fantastical storytelling with reflections on life, death, and attachment, creating a layered narrative that bridges imagination and introspection.
The film marks the first Hong Kong animated feature selected for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival since MY LIFE AS MCDULL, and the first to enter its “Midnight Specials” section.
The film went on to win Best Animated Feature at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards, and received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Film Score. With box office earnings exceeding HK$15 million, it has become the highest-grossing Hong Kong animated film in history, as well as the second highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 2025, affirming its rare achievement in both artistic recognition and commercial success.
