Synopsis
In this film, Hou Hsiao-hsien offers a poetic exploration of urban youth at the turn of the millennium, where emotional states and memory flow freely across time. It follows a young woman Vicky (Shu Qi) moving between intimacy and detachment, as memory becomes a shifting, fluid experience within Taipei’s nocturnal cityscape.
Through Hou’s signature long takes and restrained pacing, a generation in quiet drift is carefully observed. Neon light and electronic soundscapes shape a world that feels both intimate and distant, grounded in emotional ambiguity. Beyond love and loss, the film becomes a reflection on identity, belonging, and dislocation. For diasporic viewers, its sense of searching and unresolved connection feels especially immediate.
This 4K restoration revives the film’s visual and sonic richness, offering a renewed encounter with its immersive flow of time and atmosphere on the big screen.
